Vishnu Stotram: Vishnu Sahasranamam, Narayana Kavacham & 100+ Vishnu Stotras with Lyrics
Vishnu stotras are hymns and name lists addressed to Vishnu, also called Narayana and Hari, the preserver who descends to the world as Rama, Krishna, Narasimha and his other avatars. This collection has more than a hundred texts: the Vishnu Sahasranamam and Narayana Kavacham, hymns by Adi Shankaracharya, prayers to Venkateswara, Narasimha, Ranganatha, Hayagriva and Vishnu's discus Sudarshana, Andal's Tiruppavai, Annamayya's Telugu keerthanas and chapters of the Narayaniyam. Vishnu is worshipped as the protector of dharma and the giver of peace and well-being. His stotras mostly praise his names and forms: reciting a name of Vishnu is itself considered worship, which is why name lists such as the Sahasranamam are central to Vaishnava practice. Krishna and Rama have their own collections: Krishna stotras and Rama stotras.

Frequently asked questions
Which Vishnu stotram is the most popular?
The Vishnu Sahasranamam, the thousand names of Vishnu, is the most widely recited. It comes from the Anushasana Parva of the Mahabharata, where Bhishma, lying on his bed of arrows, teaches it to Yudhishthira. Adi Shankaracharya's commentary on it is one of his best-known works.
How long does it take to recite the Vishnu Sahasranamam?
About 25 to 35 minutes at a steady pace, including the opening and closing verses. Many people recite it daily; others recite it on Thursdays and Ekadashi.
What is the difference between a stotram and a namavali?
A stotram is a hymn in verse, such as the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotram. A namavali lists the same names one by one, each with “Om … namah”, so that a flower or tulsi leaf can be offered with each name during archana.
Which Vishnu stotra protects from danger?
The Narayana Kavacham, from the sixth canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam, is the traditional prayer for protection. It places each part of the body and each direction under a form of Vishnu. The Sudarshana and Narasimha kavachams and stotras are also recited for protection.
Can Vishnu stotras be recited without a guru?
Stotras, namavalis, keerthanas and aartis are recited by anyone at home. Vedic texts such as the Narayana Suktam and Vishnu Suktam are traditionally learnt from a teacher so that the intonation is correct.
