About This Stotram

Overview

Achyutashtakam is an eight-verse Sanskrit hymn dedicated to Lord Vishnu, addressed by the name Achyuta, meaning the infallible or unfallen one. The text systematically invokes Vishnu's forms — Kesava, Narayana, Damodara, Vasudeva, and others — and belongs to the Vaishnava devotional tradition. It is widely attributed to Adi Shankaracharya.

What are the benefits of chanting Achyutashtakam?

  • Chanting is said to remove sins and purify the mind.
  • Devotees recite it for peace of mind and spiritual steadiness.
  • The hymn is associated with progress toward liberation (moksha).
  • It is recited to fulfil desires and seek prosperity.
  • Regular chanting is said to deepen devotion to Vishnu.

When is the best time to recite this?

Achyutashtakam is recited during morning and evening worship, on Ekadashi and Vaikuntha Ekadashi, and during Vaishnava festivals. Devotees also recite it as part of daily Vishnu puja.

Historical and traditional background

The hymn is widely attributed to Adi Shankaracharya (c. 8th century CE), the Advaita Vedanta philosopher who also composed numerous devotional hymns across traditions. Its language and content are consistent with the Bhakti tradition of Vaishnavism. The eight-verse format (ashtakam) is a common structure in Sanskrit devotional literature for its conciseness and ease of memorisation.
