Historical and traditional background

Tallapaka Annamacharya (c. 1408–1503 CE) lived during the Vijayanagara Empire and is credited with approximately 32,000 Sankeertanas, of which around 12,000 survive. He composed in Telugu and occasionally Sanskrit, dedicating most of his work to the deity at Tirumala. Podagantimayaa is a typical example of his style: direct address to the Lord using evocative epithets combined with personal supplication. His compositions were inscribed on copper plates and remain central to temple music in Andhra Pradesh.
