Historical Context
The Vishnu Suktam is a part of the Taittiriya Samhita, one of the principal recensions of the Krishna Yajurveda. The Vedic Samhitas are among the oldest religious texts in the world, believed to have been composed over a period spanning from roughly 1500 BCE to 500 BCE. The exact authorship of the Vedic hymns is traditionally attributed to the Rishis (seers) who received them through divine revelation. The Vishnu Suktam, therefore, belongs to this ancient Vedic tradition. Its inclusion in the Taittiriya Samhita indicates its importance in the ritualistic practices of that particular Vedic shakha (branch). The Suktam reflects the early Vedic conception of Vishnu as a prominent deity, whose cosmic significance grew over time to establish him as the supreme God in later Puranic and Vaishnava traditions.
