About This Stotram

Overview

The Ranganatha Ashtakam is a Sanskrit ashtakam of nine verses dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a form of Lord Vishnu worshipped reclining on the cosmic serpent Adi Shesha. The verses describe his divine attributes and auspicious form. The text belongs to the Vaishnava tradition, particularly associated with the Srirangam temple in Tamil Nadu, one of the foremost Divya Desams (sacred Vishnu temples) in South India.

What are the benefits of chanting Ranganatha Ashtakam?

  • Cultivates devotion to Lord Ranganatha (Vishnu)
  • Promotes mental clarity and spiritual discipline
  • Supports liberation (moksha) through focused Vishnu upasana
  • Brings peace and fulfillment of righteous wishes

When is the best time to recite this?

The ashtakam is recited during morning and evening worship. It is especially appropriate on Vaikunta Ekadashi, Brahmotsavam at Srirangam, and other festivals associated with Lord Ranganatha and Vishnu.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Ashtakam literature — hymns of eight or nine verses — is a well-established genre in Sanskrit devotional poetry, with the Bhakti movement producing many such texts from the 7th century onwards. The Srirangam temple, the principal shrine of Ranganatha, has been a center of Sri Vaishnava devotion since the Alvars composed hymns in its honor in the early medieval period. This ashtakam belongs to that tradition of Sanskrit praise poetry for Ranganatha. The specific author and date are not recorded; it is attributed to the broader Sanskrit devotional tradition.
