About This Stotram

Overview

The Katyayani Mantra is a Sanskrit mantra dedicated to Goddess Katyayani, the sixth form of Durga and one of the Nava Durgas. The text centers on the seed mantra "Om Hrim Katyayanyai Svaha" and includes a prayer for marital blessings rooted in the Bhagavata Purana episode in which the Gopis of Vrindavan worshipped Katyayani to obtain Lord Krishna as their husband. It belongs to the Shakta devotional tradition.

What are the benefits of chanting Katyayani Mantra?

  • Assists in finding a suitable life partner
  • Promotes marital harmony and fulfillment in relationships
  • Removes obstacles related to marriage
  • Strengthens devotion to the Divine Mother

When is the best time to recite this?

Recitation is particularly associated with the sixth day (Shashti) of Navaratri, which is dedicated to Goddess Katyayani. Fridays are also considered auspicious for Devi worship. Morning recitation before puja is the standard practice.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Goddess Katyayani is mentioned in the Devi Mahatmyam as one of the forms of Durga. The specific narrative linking this mantra to the Gopis' worship is recorded in the Bhagavata Purana (Skandha 10, Chapter 22), composed approximately between the 8th and 10th centuries CE. The seed mantra "Om Hrim Katyayanyai Svaha" is a Tantric bija formulation typical of Shakta practice, where the syllable Hrim is associated with the Divine Mother's power. The compilation of this mantra with accompanying verses is of unknown authorship; the tradition of its recitation for marital blessings is well-established across various regional practices in India.
