How Sade Sati is calculated

Your Rashi is the sidereal (Lahiri) sign of the Moon at your birth time and place. Sade Sati runs while Saturn is in the 12th, 1st and 2nd sign from it. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so each sign is one phase: rising (12th), peak (over the Moon sign) and setting (2nd).

Saturn's entries into each sign come from Swiss Ephemeris. When it moves back into the previous sign during a retrograde loop, the stays a few months apart are kept as one Sade Sati. Every Sade Sati is listed for 100 years from birth; most people have two or three.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Sade Sati last?

About seven and a half years: roughly two and a half years in each of the three signs. Retrograde loops can stretch or split a phase by a few months.

Is Sade Sati calculated from the Moon sign or the Lagna?

From the Moon sign (Rashi). That is why the birth time matters: the Moon changes sign every two and a half days.

What is the peak phase?

The middle two and a half years, when Saturn transits your Moon sign itself. It is traditionally considered the most intense part of Sade Sati.
