About This Stotram

Overview

The Ganga Stotram is a Sanskrit hymn of 14 verses dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the sacred river venerated as a divine mother in Hinduism. The text praises her celestial origin, her descent from the matted locks of Shiva, her role in the liberation of ancestors through Bhagiratha's penance, and her capacity to purify sins. It belongs to the Puranic tradition of Ganga Mahatmya devotional literature.

What are the benefits of chanting Ganga Stotram?

  • Purification of sins and spiritual cleansing
  • Attainment of spiritual merit
  • Removal of obstacles and granting of peace
  • Liberation from the cycle of birth and death

When is the best time to recite this?

Morning and evening recitation is traditional, particularly at riverbanks or places associated with the Ganga. Ganga Dashahara and pilgrimages to the holy river are the primary occasions for recitation.

What is the historical and traditional background?

The Ganga is mentioned as a divine entity in Vedic literature, and her glorification expanded greatly in Puranic sources including the Skanda Purana, Padma Purana, and Vamana Purana. The composition of stotrams in Ganga's praise became widespread during the medieval Bhakti movement when devotional poetry dedicated to sacred rivers gained prominence alongside deity-focused bhakti. The authorship and specific composition date of this text are unknown. It represents the independent stotram tradition of Ganga worship that developed alongside the major Puranic accounts.
