Dates follow the udaya tithi (the tithi at sunrise), as Jain panchangs do. Gachchhas and sanghs sometimes differ by a day; follow your own sangh's announcement where it differs.

Why monks and nuns stop travelling

Jain monks and nuns walk from place to place for most of the year. In the rains the ground teems with insects and new growth, so to avoid harming them they stay in one town for four months. The town's sangh invites them, and their arrival (Chaturmas pravesh) is celebrated.

For lay Jains Chaturmas is a time of extra fasting, discourses and restraint, and it contains Paryushan and Das Lakshana.

The end of Chaturmas

Chaturmas ends on Kartika Chaumasi Chaudas. The next day, Kartik Purnima, Shatrunjay hill at Palitana reopens to pilgrims after the rains, and thousands climb it for darshan of Bhagwan Adinath; Jain Ratha Yatras are taken out in many cities.
