What is Paryushan?
Paryushan means 'staying close' (to the soul). For eight days Shwetambar Jains step back from ordinary life to fast, meditate, listen to discourses by monks and nuns, and reflect on the karmas gathered over the year.
The eight days end on Samvatsari, Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi, when every Jain performs Samvatsari Pratikraman and asks forgiveness of all living beings. Digambar Jains keep the ten days of Das Lakshana Parva, which begin the next day.
How Paryushan is observed
Each day begins with prayer and Pratikraman. Many keep Upvas, Ekasana or Ayambil; some keep Atthai, eight full days of fasting. The first three days are given to discourses on the duties of Paryushan; from the fourth day the Kalpasutra is read.
On the fifth day the reading of Bhagwan Mahavir's birth (Mahavir Janma Vanchan) is celebrated with the fourteen dreams of Mata Trishala displayed in the upashraya. On Samvatsari the Barsasutra is read and the evening Samvatsari Pratikraman closes the parva.
How the date is fixed
Samvatsari is Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi (Bhadarvo Sud 4 in the Gujarati calendar), and Paryushan starts seven days earlier. Sanghs in North America, Europe and elsewhere keep the same days as India, so this page shows India's dates at every location. Some Sthanakvasi and Terapanthi sanghs announce their own dates, which can differ by a day.
