Dates follow the udaya tithi (the tithi at sunrise), as Jain panchangs do. Gachchhas and sanghs sometimes differ by a day; follow your own sangh's announcement where it differs.

What is Samvatsari?

Samvatsari means 'the yearly one'. On this day Jains look back on the whole year, confess their faults in the Samvatsari Pratikraman, and ask every living being for forgiveness with the words Micchami Dukkadam.

Many keep a full Upvas, without food and often without water (Chovihar). Those who cannot fast still attend Pratikraman, which lasts about three hours in the evening.

Kshamapana: forgiveness

After Pratikraman, Jains meet or message family and friends and say Micchami Dukkadam. The idea is that forgiveness is both asked and given: holding a grudge past Samvatsari is itself a fault to be confessed.

Digambar Jains keep the same spirit on Kshamavani, the day after Das Lakshana Parva.

Date and tithi

Samvatsari is Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi (Bhadarvo Sud 4), kept on the day of that tithi at sunrise in India. Jain sanghs abroad keep the Indian date. Some sanghs keep Samvatsari on Panchami in years when their panchang differs.
