Gulika Kaal, also spelled as Gulika Kalam or Guli Kai, is another inauspicious period in Vedic astrology, lasting approximately 90 minutes each day. Gulika (also called Mandi) is considered a sub-planet or upagraha associated with Saturn (Shani). As the son of Saturn, Gulika carries similar malefic influences during its period.
In Vedic astrology, Gulika represents obstacles, delays, and challenges. While not as widely known as Rahu Kaal, Gulika Kaal is equally important in traditional panchang calculations and is avoided for auspicious activities. The period's influence is believed to create hidden difficulties and unexpected complications in new ventures.
Like other inauspicious periods, Gulika Kaal doesn't prohibit all activities — only the initiation of important new undertakings. Routine work and spiritual practices can continue normally during this time.
Saturn & Gulika remedies
Worshipping Shani and offering sesame, oil lamps, and black cloth are favoured during Gulika Kaal.
Continue ongoing projects
Existing commitments and routine work face no special obstruction — only new starts are discouraged.
Meditate and introspect
Gulika's slow, inward energy supports quiet reflection, journalling, and self-examination.
Service and charity
Acts of selfless service (seva) carry extra karmic weight during Saturn's subsidiary period.
Beginning construction
Do not lay a foundation stone, break ground, or begin building work during Gulika Kaal.
Investments and financial decisions
New financial commitments made now may carry hidden complications or delayed returns.
Starting education
Enrolling in or formally beginning a new course is better scheduled outside this window.
Travel for important purposes
Departures tied to major objectives — relocation, important business — are better timed elsewhere.
Saturn worship
Sesame oil lamp and Shani remedies for protection.
Seva
Selfless service and charitable acts carry karmic benefit.
Journalling
Slow, reflective writing and strategic planning.
Meditation
Quiet inward practice aligned to Saturn's contemplative nature.
Light a sesame oil lamp, place a piece of black cloth or iron nearby, and chant the Shani Beej mantra. Offering blue flowers or iron objects to Shani on Saturdays during Gulika Kaal is considered especially powerful for protection.
ॐ प्रां प्रीं प्रौं सः शनैश्चराय नमः
Om prāṃ prīṃ prauṃ saḥ śanaiścarāya namaḥ
Salutations to the slow-moving Saturn — I honour Shani and seek release from obstructive delays.
Gulika Kaal is calculated similarly to Rahu Kaal and Yamaganda by dividing daytime into 8 equal parts. The specific period varies by weekday: Monday (5th), Tuesday (3rd), Wednesday (2nd), Thursday (1st), Friday (6th), Saturday (8th), Sunday (7th).
Who or what is Gulika exactly?
Gulika (also called Mandi) is a shadowy sub-planet or upagraha in Vedic astrology, considered the "son of Saturn". It is not a physical body — it is a calculated mathematical point associated with Saturn's malefic influence.
How is Gulika Kaal different from Rahu Kaal?
Both are inauspicious ~90-minute windows, but they fall at different times of the day. Rahu Kaal is more widely known, while Gulika Kaal is particularly noted for causing hidden or delayed obstacles rather than immediate disruptions.
Is it okay to eat during Gulika Kaal?
Routine activities like eating, cooking, and daily chores are unaffected. Gulika Kaal's avoidance applies specifically to beginning significant new undertakings.
