About This Stotram

Overview

The Sani Ashtottara Sata Nama Stotram is a Sanskrit hymn of 22 verses enumerating 108 names of Lord Shani (Saturn), presented in stotram form rather than the namavali listing format. It belongs to the Hindu graha-devotional tradition, which treats planetary deities as conscious forces that respond to prayer and proper worship.

What are the benefits of chanting Sani Ashtottara Sata Nama Stotram?

  • Mitigation of adverse Saturn placements or transits (Sade Sati, Dhaiya)
  • Attainment of patience, endurance, and stability
  • Removal of delays and hardships associated with Saturn's influence
  • Fulfillment of desires through disciplined effort and divine grace

When is the best time to recite this?

Saturday (Shanivar) is the most auspicious day, as it is dedicated to Lord Shani. It is also recited on Shani Jayanti and during periods of Saturn's transit. Evening recitation on Saturdays is traditional in many regional practices.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Worship of Shani as a planetary deity is documented in Puranic literature, including the Garuda Purana and Bhavishya Purana, where his role as a dispenser of karmic justice is described in detail. Ashtottara Sata Nama compilations for planetary deities developed within the graha-puja tradition that became well established during the medieval period. The specific authorship and source text of this stotram are not recorded. The 108-name format is a conventional framework applied to most major deities and planetary lords.
