About This Stotram

Overview

The Rama Chalisa is a Hindi devotional hymn in the chalisa format — 40 verses (chaupais) — dedicated to Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu. The verses describe Rama's divine attributes, his life as narrated in the Ramayana, his role as protector of devotees, and his nature as an ideal king and embodiment of dharma. The text belongs to the tradition of popular Hindi devotional literature that developed from the Bhakti movement in medieval north India.

What are the benefits of chanting Rama Chalisa?

  • Removes obstacles and supports resolution of difficulties
  • Cultivates devotion and spiritual merit
  • Promotes peace and mental stability
  • Provides protection from negative forces

When is the best time to recite this?

The Rama Chalisa is recited during morning and evening worship. It is particularly associated with Rama Navami and Hanuman Jayanti, and may be recited on any day when Rama's blessings are sought.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Chalisa literature developed in north India from the 16th century onwards, producing accessible vernacular devotional texts for widespread use. The Hanuman Chalisa, attributed to Tulsidas, is the most well-known example of this genre. The Rama Chalisa follows the same tradition of 40-verse popular devotional poetry. Its author is unknown and the exact date of composition has not been established; it is attributed to the collective devotional tradition rather than a single named poet.
