About This Stotram

Overview

Patanjali Yoga Sutras is a foundational Sanskrit philosophical text on the theory and practice of Raja Yoga, compiled by the sage Patanjali. The text is divided into four chapters (padas): Samadhi Pada, Sadhana Pada, Vibhuti Pada, and Kaivalya Pada. This edition presents the first chapter, Samadhi Pada, which defines yoga, describes the nature of the mind, and outlines the conditions necessary for meditative absorption (samadhi). It is a philosophical sutra text rather than a devotional stotram.

What are the benefits of chanting Patanjali Yoga Sutras?

  • Provides a systematic framework for understanding and controlling the mind
  • Guides the practitioner toward samadhi through the eight-limbed (ashtanga) path
  • Develops inner stillness by identifying and addressing causes of mental disturbance
  • Forms the theoretical basis for structured meditation and yogic practice

When is the best time to recite this?

The sutras are typically studied and contemplated rather than recited devotionally. They are especially valuable during periods of intensive meditation practice, study retreats, or when establishing a regular yoga sadhana.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Patanjali is believed to have compiled the Yoga Sutras by synthesizing earlier Samkhya and yogic traditions. Scholars date the text variously between the 2nd century BCE and the 4th century CE. The text is written in terse Sanskrit aphorisms (sutras) that require commentary (bhashya) for full interpretation; the major commentaries include those by Vyasa (Yoga Bhashya) and later by Vachaspati Mishra and Vijnanabhikshu. The Yoga Sutras occupy a central place in Indian philosophical literature and remain the primary reference text for classical yoga across all major traditions.
