IAST Transliteration:

Overview

The Sri Durga Saptashloki is considered highly significant due to its brevity and potency. It is believed to encapsulate the essence of the entire Durga Saptashati, which is a monumental work detailing the exploits of Goddess Durga against various demons. Reciting these seven verses is thought to invoke the blessings of the Divine Mother in her fierce and benevolent forms, granting protection, prosperity, and spiritual advancement. Its particular relevance in Kali Yuga stems from the belief that in this age of spiritual decline, such condensed mantras are more accessible and effective for devotees seeking divine grace and worldly success.

Origin The origin of the Sri Durga Saptashloki is generally attributed to the Brahmanda Purana, specifically within the Markandeya Purana section, though it is often presented as a standalone hymn. It is believed to be a condensed essence of the larger Durga Saptashati (also known as Chandipatha). The context within the Purana often involves a dialogue between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati (Devi), where Shiva inquires about a means for achieving success in Kali Yuga. Devi then reveals this seven-verse hymn as a potent mantra for fulfilling all desires and attaining spiritual liberation in the current age.

Benefits of Recitation

  1. Fulfillment of all desires (Sarva-ishtasadhanam)
  2. Success in endeavors (Karya-siddhi)
  3. Protection from negative influences
  4. Attainment of spiritual liberation (Moksha)
  5. Removal of obstacles

Best Time to Recite

Morning, evening, during Navaratri, Durga Puja, or any time one seeks the blessings of Goddess Durga.

Historical Context

While the exact date of composition is unknown, the Sri Durga Saptashloki is part of the Puranic literature, which developed over centuries, with the Puranas generally believed to have been compiled between the 4th and 15th centuries CE. Its inclusion within or association with the Brahmanda Purana and Markandeya Purana places it within this broad historical framework. The hymn's emphasis on efficacy in Kali Yuga suggests its continued relevance and potential recomposition or popularization during periods when the need for accessible spiritual practices was emphasized. The author is unknown, as is common with many ancient Sanskrit hymns and Puranic texts.
