About This Stotram

Overview

The Shani Stotram Dasaratha Krutam is an 11-verse Sanskrit stotram dedicated to Lord Shani, attributed to King Dasharatha of Ayodhya — father of Lord Rama in the Ramayana tradition. The text describes Shani's formidable attributes while seeking his benevolent aspect, and it belongs to the devotional literature surrounding planetary deity (graha) worship in Shaiva and Vaishnava adjacent folk traditions.

What are the benefits of chanting Shani Stotram Dasaratha Krutam?

  • Mitigation of Shani's adverse influences, including Sade Sati and Shani Dhaiya
  • Relief from obstacles, delays, and misfortunes attributed to Saturn's transit
  • Protection during astrologically difficult periods
  • Support for favorable outcomes in endeavors

When is the best time to recite this?

Saturday (Shaniwar) is the most auspicious day for this stotram, and it can be recited in the morning or evening. It is particularly recommended during active periods of Shani Sade Sati or Shani Dhaiya, or at any time when Shani's influence is considered challenging in the natal chart.

What is the historical and traditional background?

This stotram is traditionally attributed to King Dasharatha, who according to devotional narrative composed it to overcome astrological afflictions caused by Shani's planetary transit. The exact scriptural source has not been definitively established, and the text circulates in collections of Shani-related mantras and stotrams rather than in a single canonical Purana. The practice of composing propitiatory hymns to planetary deities is documented in texts such as the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and reflects the integration of Jyotisha (astrology) with Hindu devotional practice.
