About This Stotram

Overview

Pitru Stotram 3 (Brihaddharma Puranam) is a nine-verse Sanskrit hymn to the Pitrus (deified ancestors) found within the Brihaddharma Purana. The text praises the Pitrus with reverential epithets, seeks their blessings for the welfare of descendants, and belongs to the body of Puranic literature governing ancestral rites (shraaddha) in Hindu tradition.

What are the benefits of chanting Pitru Stotram 3?

  • Propitiates the ancestral spirits and invites their benevolent presence
  • Helps resolve pitru dosha through devotional recitation
  • Secures the ancestors' blessings for the prosperity of the family
  • Supports the spiritual progress of both the reciter and the departed

When is the best time to recite this?

This stotram is recited during Pitru Paksha (the fortnight for ancestral rites), on Mahalaya Amavasya, and on the death anniversaries (shraddha tithis) of specific ancestors. It may also be used on any Amavasya day.

What is the historical and traditional background?

The Brihaddharma Purana is a later Purana, estimated to have been composed between the 8th and 15th centuries CE, and is attributed by tradition to Vedavyasa like other Mahapuranas. It contains detailed discussions of dharma, ritual, and devotional practice, including specific hymns for ancestral propitiation. The stotram's placement within this Purana provides its scriptural authority. The author of the individual stotram is not named within the text, consistent with the Puranic convention of attributing contents to the overarching sage-compiler.
