About This Stotram

Overview

Pitar Chalisa (also called Shri Pitar Chalisa) is a Hindi devotional hymn composed in the chalisa format, dedicated to the Pitru Devas — the deified ancestors venerated in Hindu tradition. The text invokes the collective presence of the ancestors for guidance, protection, and blessings, and is used as part of the broader Hindu practice of ancestor propitiation (pitru puja). It belongs to the Hindi folk devotional tradition.

What are the benefits of chanting Pitar Chalisa?

  • Seeks the blessings of departed ancestors for family prosperity
  • Addresses and helps resolve pitru dosha (negative ancestral karmic influence)
  • Provides a structured devotional means of fulfilling filial duty to ancestors
  • Brings peace to departed souls and harmony to the family lineage

When is the best time to recite this?

The chalisa is recited on Mondays, Amavasya (new moon day), and throughout Pitru Paksha — the two-week period in the lunar calendar dedicated to ancestral rites. It may also be recited on the death anniversaries of specific ancestors.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Ancestor worship (shraaddha and pitru puja) is among the oldest obligations in Hindu dharma, prescribed in Vedic texts including the Rigveda and elaborated in the Puranas. The chalisa format itself is a medieval Hindi literary form, and the Pitar Chalisa emerged from folk devotional traditions rather than from a Vedic or Puranic source. Its author is unknown, and it likely developed orally before gaining written circulation. The personification of the collective ancestors as "Pitareshwar" (Lord of Ancestors) reflects the popular devotional practice of giving personal form to the abstract Pitru Devas.
