About This Stotram
Overview
Parvati Vallabha Ashtakam is a nine-verse Sanskrit hymn addressed to Lord Shiva in his aspect as the beloved consort of Goddess Parvati ("Parvati Vallabha" meaning "dear to Parvati"). The verses catalog Shiva's divine attributes — including his role as lord of all beings, his cosmic power over time, his association with sacred ash, and his meditative nature — and belong to the Shaiva devotional tradition.
What are the benefits of chanting Parvati Vallabha Ashtakam?
- Invokes Shiva's grace and blessings through praise of his divine qualities
- Deepens devotion to Shiva by focusing on his relationship with Parvati
- Promotes peace and spiritual focus through structured ashtakam recitation
- Supports removal of obstacles when recited on auspicious Shiva-associated days
When is the best time to recite this?
The ashtakam is recited in the morning or evening. Pradosha (the thirteenth lunar day), Mondays, and Maha Shivaratri are particularly suitable occasions for its recitation.
What is the historical and traditional background?
Ashtakams — hymns of eight or nine verses — are a standard form in Sanskrit devotional literature, composed by saints and scholars across centuries in the Shaiva tradition. The author and precise composition date of this particular ashtakam are not recorded. Its language and structure are consistent with the Sanskrit devotional literature that developed from the medieval period onward in the Shaiva tradition of South and central India. It is not directly traceable to a specific Puranic or Agamic source.
