About This Stotram

Overview

The Navaratna Malika Stotram is a Sanskrit stotram of 10 verses dedicated to the supreme goddess (Paradevata), structured as a "garland of nine jewels" — a devotional composition in which each verse represents a precious element of praise. The text addresses the divine feminine with imagery describing her cosmic significance, adornments, and gracious nature. It belongs to the Shakta tradition within Hindu devotional practice.

What are the benefits of chanting Navaratna Malika Stotram?

  • Invokes the grace of the supreme goddess through a carefully crafted set of praises
  • Cultivates devotion to the divine feminine in her supreme form
  • Used as a meditation text focused on the attributes of the goddess
  • Supports Shakta devotional practice as a concentrated hymn of nine key praises

When is the best time to recite this?

The stotram is recited in the morning and evening. Navaratri, Devi festivals, and Friday — traditionally associated with goddess worship in the Hindu calendar — are auspicious occasions for its recitation.

What is the historical and traditional background?

The "malika" (garland) format is a recognized form in Sanskrit devotional literature, in which a specified number of verses are strung together as a unified praise composition. Nine-jewel (navaratna) compositions appear across Shaiva, Shakta, and Vaishnava traditions, each selecting nine key aspects or praises of the chosen deity. The authorship and exact date of composition of this specific stotram are not known. The text draws on classical Sanskrit conventions for describing the divine feminine and belongs to the broader Shakta corpus of goddess praise literature.
