About This Stotram

Overview

Narayaniyam Dashaka 1 is the opening ten-verse section of the Narayaniyam, a Sanskrit devotional work composed by Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri in the 16th century CE. This dashaka, titled "Bhagavatah Svarupam Tatha Mahatmyam" (The Form and Glory of the Lord), introduces the nature of Brahman as pure consciousness and bliss and establishes Lord Narayana as worshipped at the Guruvayur temple in Kerala as the accessible form of that ultimate reality. The Narayaniyam as a whole is a devotional condensation of the Srimad Bhagavatam in 1,000 verses across 100 dashakas.

What are the benefits of chanting Narayaniyam Dashaka 1?

  • Introduces the Narayaniyam and orients the mind toward contemplation of the divine form
  • Deepens devotion to Lord Narayana as understood in the Advaita Vedanta framework
  • Used as an opening invocation before reciting other sections of the Narayaniyam
  • Associated with receiving the grace of Lord Guruvayurappan

When is the best time to recite this?

The dashaka is recited in the morning and evening as part of daily devotional practice. Guruvayur Ekadashi and festivals dedicated to Lord Vishnu are particularly auspicious occasions. It is commonly recited before beginning the full Narayaniyam.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Melpathur Narayana Bhattathiri (c. 1560–1646 CE) composed the Narayaniyam at the Guruvayur temple in Kerala while suffering from a debilitating illness. He composed one dashaka each day over 100 days, completing the work as an act of devotion to Lord Krishna-Narayana. The Narayaniyam is grounded in Advaita Vedanta philosophy while expressing intense devotional feeling, and it is recited daily at the Guruvayur temple. The first dashaka's focus on the formless nature of Brahman made manifest at Guruvayur reflects Bhattathiri's synthesis of Vedantic philosophy and temple-centered devotion.
