About This Stotram
Overview
The Maha Lakshmi Ashtakam is an eight-verse Sanskrit hymn honoring Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity, and auspiciousness. Each verse praises a specific attribute or form of Lakshmi — including her mount Garuda, her role in vanquishing demons, and her capacity to grant boons. It belongs to the Puranic devotional tradition and is drawn from the Skanda Purana, Brahmanda Khanda.
What are the benefits of chanting Maha Lakshmi Ashtakam?
- Invokes blessings for material and financial well-being
- Removes poverty and financial distress
- Grants auspiciousness and good fortune
- Offers protection from obstacles and negative influences
When is the best time to recite this?
The Maha Lakshmi Ashtakam is recited daily, especially during morning (Brahma Muhurta) and evening (Sandhya Kala) prayers. Fridays are particularly recommended, as they are traditionally dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi. It is also recited during Diwali, Navaratri, and Varalakshmi Vratam.
What is the historical and traditional background?
The Maha Lakshmi Ashtakam originates from the Skanda Purana, Brahmanda Khanda, where it appears as a dialogue in which Indra seeks Lakshmi's blessings. The Puranic tradition, which produced this hymn, spans roughly the 4th to 16th centuries CE. The authorship is attributed to the compilers of the Puranas and is therefore considered anonymous or of divine origin. It is widely included in collections of Puranic devotional literature across India.
