What is the historical and traditional background?
Graha stotrams for the nine planetary deities developed as a specialized genre within Vedic and Puranic devotional literature. Mars is identified in ancient texts as a deity associated with energy, courage, and the martial qualities, and also as a source of obstacles in marital matters when inauspiciously placed. Pancharatna compositions — five-verse hymns — are a recognized form found for various deities. The authorship of this specific stotram is not attributed to any known composer, and the text is considered part of the traditional corpus of astrological devotional literature.
