About This Stotram

Overview

The Kanakadhara Stotram is a 21-verse Sanskrit hymn dedicated to Goddess Lakshmi, composed by Adi Shankaracharya. The text is notable for the legend associated with its composition: Shankaracharya is said to have composed it to invoke Lakshmi's grace for a destitute Brahmin woman, resulting in a shower of golden amla fruits. "Kanakadhara" means "stream of gold." The hymn belongs to the Vaishnava devotional tradition and is one of the most widely recited Lakshmi stotrams.

What are the benefits of chanting Kanakadhara Stotram?

  • Invokes the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi for wealth and prosperity
  • Removes poverty and financial obstacles
  • Fulfills sincere material and spiritual desires
  • Purifies the mind and deepens devotion

When is the best time to recite this?

Recitation is recommended on Fridays, during Diwali, on auspicious occasions such as new business ventures or weddings, and during morning prayers. It is a standard practice to recite it daily for a fixed period when seeking Lakshmi's blessings.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Adi Shankaracharya (c. 788–820 CE), the Advaita Vedanta philosopher and saint, is the attributed author. The stotram is not extracted from any Vedic or Puranic scripture but is an independent composition. Its associated legend — in which compassion for a poor woman prompts the composition — is recounted in multiple hagiographies of Shankaracharya. The hymn uses imagery of Lakshmi seated on a lotus, adorned with gold, and surrounded by divine splendor, drawing on descriptions of the Goddess found in the Sri Suktam and Vishnu Purana. Its continued use across centuries attests to its established place in Lakshmi puja traditions throughout India.
