About This Stotram
Overview
The Gopika Geetha is a 19-verse Sanskrit hymn from the Bhagavata Purana (Skandha 10, Chapter 31), sung by the Gopis of Vrindavan during the Rasa Lila when Lord Krishna temporarily withdraws from their sight. It expresses the Gopis' longing for Krishna and is regarded within the Bhagavata tradition as an illustration of the highest form of selfless devotion (parabhakti). The text is attributed to Vyasa as part of the Bhagavata Purana.
What are the benefits of chanting Gopika Geetha?
- Deepens understanding of bhakti as the Bhagavata Purana describes it
- Recitation is associated with spiritual solace and removal of obstacles on the devotional path
- Cultivates the quality of surrender (prapatti) through meditation on the Gopis' state
- Associated with gaining proximity to Lord Krishna through sincere devotion
When is the best time to recite this?
The Gopika Geetha is recited during the month of Shravana and on Janmashtami. Rasa Purnima, the full moon associated with Krishna's Rasa Lila, is another traditional occasion. Morning recitation during Krishna worship is common among Vaishnava practitioners.
What is the historical and traditional background?
The Bhagavata Purana is generally dated between the 8th and 10th centuries CE and is attributed to Vyasa in the Puranic tradition. The Tenth Skandha, which contains the Gopika Geetha, is the most widely read section of the text and forms the scriptural basis for Bhagavata devotional schools, including Gaudiya Vaishnavism. The Gopis are presented in this tradition as exemplary devotees whose love for Krishna transcends all social and ritual constraints. Commentaries on the Gopika Geetha have been written by numerous Vaishnava acharyas, including Sridhara Swami and Vishvanatha Chakravarti.
