About This Stotram

Overview

The Go Suktam is a Vedic hymn from the Rigveda (Mandala 6, Sukta 28) dedicated to the cow (go) and its divine significance in Vedic culture. The hymn invokes Indra, the king of the gods, in connection with the cow's nourishing and auspicious qualities, seeking material and spiritual well-being. It belongs to the Rigvedic tradition and is among the oldest surviving texts on bovine veneration in Indian religious literature.

What are the benefits of chanting Go Suktam?

  • Prosperity and abundance in agricultural and pastoral life
  • Protection for cattle and household well-being
  • Fulfillment of desires through divine favor
  • Blessings for progeny and community prosperity

When is the best time to recite this?

Morning and evening recitation is traditional. Gopashtami, a festival specifically dedicated to the worship of cows, is a primary occasion. It is also recited during times of seeking general prosperity and welfare.

What is the historical and traditional background?

The Rigveda is one of the oldest extant religious texts in any Indo-European language, with composition generally dated between 1500 and 1200 BCE. The cow held a central position in Vedic society as a source of nourishment, wealth, and ritual material, and this is reflected in multiple hymns across the Rigveda. The specific Sukta (6.28) is attributed to the seer associated with the sixth Mandala. Individual Suktas are traditionally attributed to the rishis who received them, though precise historical attribution is not possible. The Go Suktam would have been recited in Vedic rituals and daily pastoral life.
