Morning and evening recitation is traditional, particularly at riverbanks or places associated with the Ganga. Ganga Dashahara and pilgrimages to the holy river are the primary occasions for recitation.
What is the historical and traditional background?
The Ganga is mentioned as a divine entity in Vedic literature, and her glorification expanded greatly in Puranic sources including the Skanda Purana, Padma Purana, and Vamana Purana.
