About This Stotram
Overview
Durga Saptasati Chapter 12 (Phalashruti Adhyaya) is the final chapter of the Devi Mahatmyam, containing 41 verses that enumerate the merits (phala) obtained by reciting the preceding eleven chapters. It also contains a dhyana shloka for Goddess Durga. The chapter functions as the concluding section of the full Chandipatha sequence within the Markandeya Purana.
What are the benefits of chanting Durga Saptasati Chapter 12?
- The Phalashruti explicitly lists the material and spiritual benefits of reciting the full Devi Mahatmyam, including protection from enemies, relief from illness, and removal of sins.
- The dhyana shloka within the chapter supports meditative visualization of the goddess.
- Recitation of this chapter closes the full Chandipatha cycle and is considered an integral part of the complete practice.
- Chanting the Phalashruti independently is also practiced to invoke the fruits described therein.
- The text reinforces the efficacy of the full Saptasati recitation for both worldly and spiritual aims.
When is the best time to recite this?
Navaratri is the primary occasion. Chapter 12 is recited at the conclusion of the full Saptasati during the Chandipatha. It can also be recited independently at any time, particularly after completing worship sessions.
What is the historical and traditional background?
Chapter 12 is the Phalashruti chapter of the Devi Mahatmyam, which forms chapters 81-93 of the Markandeya Purana (approximately 4th-6th centuries CE). Phalashruti chapters are a standard literary device in Puranic and Tantric texts, serving to motivate practice and summarize the text's scope. This chapter, along with the Narayani Stuti in Chapter 11, is among the most frequently recited sections outside of the full reading cycle. The authorship follows the general attribution of the Markandeya Purana to the sage Markandeya.
