About This Stotram

Overview

The Chandra Kavacham is a 6-verse Sanskrit kavacham dedicated to Chandra, the Hindu deity of the Moon. The text follows the kavacham format of assigning divine protection to different parts of the body, and includes an invocation attributing Gautama Rishi as the seer (rishi) of the text. It belongs to the Navagraha kavacham tradition within the Puranic and Tantric devotional framework.

What are the benefits of chanting Chandra Kavacham?

  • Protection from negative astrological influences of the Moon
  • Promotion of mental peace and emotional balance
  • Attainment of prosperity and relief from anxieties
  • General well-being and protection from obstacles

When is the best time to recite this?

Monday (Chandra's day), Purnima (full moon), and Amavasya (new moon) are the primary recommended times. It is particularly practiced during periods of emotional difficulty or mental disturbance, and when Chandra is adversely placed in an individual's horoscope.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Kavachams as protective hymns became a distinct genre of Sanskrit devotional literature during the Puranic and Tantric periods. The attribution of Gautama Rishi as the seer connects this kavacham to the venerable Vedic lineage associated with Sage Gautama, lending the text traditional authority within the Vedic framework. The exact date of composition and the individual author are not known, which is common for texts of this type. The Navagraha kavacham tradition addresses each of the nine planetary deities in turn, providing a standardized framework of protective recitation that has been in use for several centuries within Hindu devotional practice.
