It belongs to the South Indian Ayyappa devotional tradition which draws on both Shaiva and Vaishnava elements.

What is the historical and traditional background?
Lord Ayyappa's worship has its roots in South Indian regional traditions, particularly in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. His mythology identifies him as the son of Shiva and Vishnu in the Mohini form, placing the tradition at the intersection of Shaivism and Vaishnavism. This short 5-verse stotram is likely a modern devotional composition rather than an ancient classical text, and its authorship is unknown. It is one of several brief hymns compiled for use in popular and temple-based Ayyappa worship.
