About This Stotram

Overview

The Ayyappa Ashtottara Sata Nama Stotram is a Sanskrit hymn listing 108 names of Lord Ayyappa, presented in a verse format across 15 verses. It belongs to the South Indian Ayyappa devotional tradition and is used as a structured meditation on the deity's attributes.

What are the benefits of chanting Ayyappa Ashtottara Sata Nama Stotram?

  • Recitation is said to bring Lord Ayyappa's grace and blessings upon the devotee.
  • It is chanted to remove obstacles and difficulties in daily life.
  • Devotees use it for protection from negative forces.
  • It is believed to fulfill sincere desires and aspirations.
  • Regular chanting is associated with spiritual growth and peace of mind.

When is the best time to recite this?

Mornings and evenings are appropriate. The Mandala season — the 41-day observance leading up to Makaravilakku — is the primary period for intensive Ayyappa devotional practice. Fridays and Saturdays are also considered auspicious days for recitation. It is traditionally recited before undertaking the Sabarimala pilgrimage.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Lord Ayyappa is primarily worshipped in South India, with the Sabarimala temple in Kerala being the central pilgrimage site. His mythology describes him as the son of Shiva and Vishnu (in the Mohini avatar), linking his tradition to both Shaiva and Vaishnava lineages. The compilation of 108 names into an Ashtottara Shatanamavali follows a genre common across Hindu devotional literature. The authorship and precise date of this specific compilation are unknown; it likely developed within the past few centuries as Ayyappa worship became more widely organized.
