Morning and evening recitation is standard. Purnima (full moon) nights and the Karthigai Deepam festival are considered particularly auspicious for reciting this hymn in the context of Arunachala worship.
What is the historical and traditional background?
The stotram is attributed to Adi Shankaracharya, the 8th-century Advaita philosopher and theologian who traveled extensively across India consolidating Vedanta philosophy. Arunachala is one of the Pancha Bhoota Sthalas, representing the element of fire (Agni). The stotram emphasizes the singular spiritual potency of Arunachala, stating that mere remembrance of the hill grants liberation. Shankaracharya's compositions typically reflect Advaita philosophy, and this hymn is consistent in style with his other devotional works.
