About This Stotram

Overview

Kattedura Vaikuntham is a Telugu keerthana by Tallapaka Annamacharya (1408–1503 CE) glorifying the Tirumala hills as equivalent to Vaikuntha, the celestial abode of Lord Vishnu. The text describes the rocks of Tirumala as manifestations of the Vedas and the hills as inhabited by divine beings. The composition belongs to the Vaishnava devotional tradition of South India.

What are the benefits of chanting Kattedura Vaikuntham?

  • Cultivates reverence for Tirumala as a sacred pilgrimage site.
  • Associated with the devotional practice of visualizing the earthly site as divine abode.
  • Recited during pilgrimages to Tirumala and on festival days at the temple.
  • Supports understanding of the Vaishnava theological identification of Tirumala with Vaikuntha.
  • Part of the Annamayya Keerthanalu corpus used in temple and home devotion.

When is the best time to recite this?

Morning and evening prayers are appropriate. The keerthana is particularly suited to recitation during a pilgrimage to Tirumala. No single prescriptive time beyond general devotional use is specified in tradition.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Tallapaka Annamacharya (1408–1503 CE) composed this keerthana during the Vijayanagara Empire as part of his corpus of over 32,000 sankirtanas. He served at the Tirumala temple and composed numerous songs glorifying the hills themselves as a sacred space. His works were preserved on copper plates at Tirumala and rediscovered in the 20th century. The theological identification of Tirumala with Vaikuntha is a standard concept in South Indian Vaishnavism and is reflected across several of his compositions.
