About This Stotram

Overview

Jo Achyutananda is a Telugu keerthana by Tallapaka Annamacharya (1408–1503 CE) addressed to Lord Vishnu using the names Achyuta and Mukunda. The refrain "Jo Achyutananda Jo Jo Mukunda" employs the style of a lullaby, portraying the Lord as a divine child and invoking maternal affection as a mode of devotion. The composition belongs to the Vaishnava devotional tradition of South India.

What are the benefits of chanting Jo Achyutananda?

  • Cultivates maternal devotion (vatsalya bhakti) toward Lord Vishnu.
  • Associated with seeking spiritual bliss and purification of the mind.
  • Recited during Vaishnava festivals, including Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Janmashtami.
  • Set to raga Kapi and tala Adi for Carnatic musical practice.
  • Part of the Annamayya Keerthanalu corpus used in temple and home devotion.

When is the best time to recite this?

Morning and evening prayer sessions are appropriate. The keerthana is particularly associated with Vaishnava festivals such as Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Janmashtami. It may be recited at any time as part of devotional practice.

What is the historical and traditional background?

Tallapaka Annamacharya (1408–1503 CE) composed this keerthana during the Vijayanagara Empire as part of his corpus of over 32,000 sankirtanas. Of the approximately 32,000 compositions, about 12,000 are extant. His works were inscribed on copper plates at the Tirumala temple and rediscovered in the 20th century. The lullaby form used in this keerthana is a device in the Vaishnava Bhakti tradition — similar in spirit to Krishna-lullaby compositions found in other regional traditions. The composition is set to ragas Kapi and Kedar, and tala Adi.
