About This Stotram

Overview

Aghamarshana Suktam is a Vedic hymn for sin expiation and purification. "Aghamarshana" means destroyer of sins. The hymn appears in the Rigveda (Mandala 1, Sukta 113) and in the Taittiriya Aranyaka of the Krishna Yajurveda (8.1), making it one of the oldest purification texts in Hindu practice.

What are the benefits of chanting Aghamarshana Suktam?

  • The suktam is recited for purification from sins committed knowingly or unknowingly.
  • Devotees chant it to remove negative karma accumulated over time.
  • It is used to prepare the mind before other rituals or daily worship.
  • The hymn invokes the purifying grace of Varuna, Indra, and other Vedic deities.
  • Regular recitation is said to maintain spiritual cleanliness (shaucha).

When is the best time to recite this?

Aghamarshana Suktam is traditionally recited during morning and evening sandhya (twilight worship). It is also recited before major rituals, during purification ceremonies, and as part of Brahmayajna (daily Vedic recitation).

Historical and traditional background

This is one of the oldest hymns in Hinduism, dating to the Vedic period and preserved in both the Rigveda and the Taittiriya Aranyaka. It belongs to the shruti (revealed text) category, meaning it is considered divinely received rather than authored. The hymn addresses Varuna, the Vedic deity of cosmic order, water, and moral law. It has been continuously used in Brahmanical ritual since Vedic times.
