About This Stotram
Taittiriya Upanishad
Sanskrit Title: तैत्तिरीय उपनिषद् - आनन्दवल्ली
IAST Transliteration:
Overview
The Ananda Valli is highly significant in Hindu philosophy as it systematically explains the nature of Brahman and the path to realizing it. It introduces the concept of 'Ananda' (bliss) as the essential characteristic of Brahman, moving beyond intellectual understanding to experiential realization. The Valli uses a graded approach, starting from the grosser sheaths of the self (annamaya, pranamaya, manomaya, vijnanamaya) and culminating in the anandamaya kosha (sheath of bliss), which is identified with Brahman. The opening mantra, 'Sah Navavatu...', is a universal prayer for protection and shared learning, emphasizing the importance of a harmonious teacher-student relationship. The subsequent verses define Brahman as 'Satyam Jnanam Anantam Brahma' (Truth, Knowledge, Infinite Brahman), a statement that forms the bedrock of Vedanta.

| Origin | The provided text is not a stotram in the conventional sense but rather a section from the Taittiriya Upanishad, specifically the Ananda Valli (आनन्दवल्ली). The Upanishads are foundational texts of Vedanta philosophy, considered part of the Shruti literature, believed to be divinely revealed. The Ananda Valli is the second Valli (chapter) of the Taittiriya Upanishad, which itself is part of the Krishna Yajurveda. It expounds on the nature of Brahman (the ultimate reality) and the bliss (Ananda) that arises from its realization. The verses quoted are the opening mantra and the beginning of the first mantra of the Ananda Valli, which are chanted for peace and auspiciousness before the study of the Upanishad and then delve into the definition of Brahman. |

Historical Context
The Taittiriya Upanishad, and by extension the Ananda Valli, is one of the older Upanishads, likely composed during the late Vedic period (around 6th to 4th century BCE). It is part of the Taittiriya Aranyaka of the Krishna Yajurveda. The composition of the Upanishads marks a shift in Vedic thought from ritualistic practices to philosophical inquiry and the exploration of inner consciousness. The Ananda Valli, in particular, is attributed to the wisdom traditions passed down through generations of rishis (seers). The author is unknown as the Upanishads are considered Shruti, meaning 'that which is heard', implying divine revelation rather than human authorship.
