About This Stotram
Srimad Bhagawad Gita Chapter 5
Sanskrit Title: श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता मूलम् - पञ्चमोऽध्यायः
IAST Transliteration:
Overview
Chapter 5 of the Bhagavad Gita is highly significant as it reconciles two seemingly opposing paths to spiritual liberation: Karma Sannyasa Yoga (the yoga of renunciation of actions) and Karma Yoga (the yoga of selfless action). Lord Krishna clarifies that both paths lead to the same ultimate goal, but Karma Yoga is often considered superior and more accessible for most individuals. This chapter emphasizes the importance of performing one's duties without attachment to the results, seeing the divine in all beings, and maintaining inner equanimity. It teaches that true renunciation lies not in abandoning actions, but in renouncing the ego and the desire for the fruits of those actions. By understanding and practicing the principles of Karma Yoga as expounded in this chapter, devotees can purify their minds, overcome desires and aversions, and ultimately attain Moksha (liberation).

Historical Context
The Srimad Bhagavad Gita, including Chapter 5, is believed to have been revealed by Lord Krishna to Arjuna during the Mahabharata war. The author is traditionally attributed to Maharishi Vyasa, who compiled the Vedas and the Mahabharata. The discourse takes place on the battlefield just before the war begins, addressing Arjuna's existential crisis and moral dilemma. Chapter 5, 'Karma Sannyasa Yoga', was spoken by Lord Krishna in response to Arjuna's query about the superiority of renunciation (sannyasa) versus action (karma yoga). The philosophical context is the ancient Indian tradition of seeking liberation (moksha) through various spiritual disciplines, and Krishna's discourse aims to provide a practical and universally applicable path.
