Srimad Bhagawad Gita Chapter 4
Sanskrit Title: श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता मूलम् - चतुर्थोऽध्यायः
IAST Transliteration:
Overview
Chapter 4 of the Bhagawad Gita, titled 'Jnana Karma Sanyasa Yoga' (The Yoga of Knowledge and Renunciation of Action), is ly significant. It elucidates the eternal nature of the soul, the divine descent of the Lord, and the true meaning of renunciation and action. Lord Krishna explains that true renunciation is not the abandonment of action, but the renunciation of the fruits of action, performed with knowledge and devotion. This chapter emphasizes that all actions, when performed as an offering to the Divine and without attachment to results, become a means to spiritual purification and liberation. It highlights the importance of knowledge (Jnana) as the ultimate purifier and the path to realizing the oneness of the self with the Supreme.

The Bhagawad Gita itself is presented as a dialogue between Lord Krishna and the warrior prince Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra, as part of the epic Mahabharata. The composition of the Mahabharata, and thus the Bhagawad Gita, is traditionally attributed to the Srimant Ved Vyas. The exact date of composition is uncertain, but it is generally considered to be an ancient text, likely composed between the 5th and 2nd centuries BCE. |

Historical Context
The Bhagawad Gita is part of the Bhishma Parva of the Mahabharata. The dialogue occurs just before the commencement of the Kurukshetra war, when Arjuna is overcome with despair at the prospect of fighting his own kin. Lord Krishna, as his charioteer and divine guide, imparts spiritual wisdom. Chapter 4 specifically addresses Arjuna's confusion about renunciation versus action, a central theme in Vedic philosophy. The discourse reflects the philosophical and spiritual milieu of ancient India, integrating various yogic paths and emphasizing the synthesis of knowledge, action, and devotion.
