About This Stotram

Srimad Bhagawad Gita Chapter 13

Sanskrit Title: श्रीमद्भगवद्गीता मूलम् - त्रयोदशोऽध्यायः
IAST Transliteration:

Overview

Chapter 13 of the Bhagavad Gita is ly significant as it systematically explains the concepts of 'kshetra' (the field, referring to the physical body and the material world) and 'kshetrajna' (the knower of the field, referring to the soul or consciousness). Lord Krishna elucidates that while the body is perishable, the soul is eternal and the true essence of a being. This chapter provides a detailed analysis of the constituents of the 'kshetra' and the qualities of the 'kshetrajna'. It emphasizes that by understanding this distinction, one can transcend material identification and realize the divine within. The knowledge imparted here is crucial for spiritual progress, leading to detachment, equanimity, and ultimately, liberation from the cycle of birth and death. It forms the basis for understanding the nature of reality and the path to self-realization.

Origin This stotram is the thirteenth chapter of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, a foundational scripture in Hinduism. The Bhagavad Gita is part of the epic Mahabharata, compiled by the Srimant Ved Vyas. The exact date of composition is debated among scholars, but it is generally considered to be ancient, likely composed between the 5th and 2nd centuries BCE. This chapter, titled 'Kshetrakshetrajnavibhaga Yoga' (The Yoga of the Distinction between the Field and the Knower of the Field), is a discourse between Lord Krishna and Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. It delves into the nature of the body (kshetra) and the soul or consciousness (kshetrajna), and their relationship. The content is presented as a divine revelation from Lord Krishna.

Benefits of Recitation

  1. Understanding the distinction between the material body and the soul.
  2. Gaining knowledge of the true self (Atman).
  3. Developing detachment from the material world.
  4. Achieving spiritual liberation (Moksha).
  5. Cultivating wisdom and discernment.

Best Time to Recite

Can be recited at any time, but particularly beneficial during periods of introspection, meditation, or when seeking clarity on the nature of existence. Regular recitation is encouraged for spiritual growth.

Historical Context

The Bhagavad Gita, and thus Chapter 13, is embedded within the epic Mahabharata. The discourse occurs just before the commencement of the Kurukshetra War, a pivotal event in Hindu mythology. Arjuna, overwhelmed by the prospect of fighting his kinsmen, seeks guidance from Lord Krishna. The Gita is Krishna's response, offering philosophical and spiritual insights. Chapter 13 specifically addresses Arjuna's confusion about the nature of the self and the material world, providing a philosophical framework for understanding existence. The authorship is attributed to the Srimant Ved Vyas, who is also credited with compiling the Vedas and the Mahabharata. The precise historical period of its composition is subject to scholarly debate, but it is considered an ancient text integral to Hindu philosophy.
