About This Stotram
Overview
The Shiva Sankalpa Upanishad, also known as Shiva Sankalpamastu, is a Vedic text of 36 mantras belonging to the Shukla Yajurveda tradition. Each mantra describes the mind (manas) as the seat of consciousness — governing perception, memory, and intention — and concludes with the refrain "may my mind resolve itself into auspicious thought (shiva sankalpa)." The text is associated with the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad and is considered part of the Vedic mantra corpus.
What are the benefits of chanting Shiva Sankalpa Upanishad?
- Cultivates a disciplined and auspiciously directed mind through mantra repetition
- Supports mental clarity and focused intention in daily life and spiritual practice
- Used as a meditation text to align thought and action with higher purpose
- Connects the practitioner with the Vedic understanding of mind as the instrument of liberation
When is the best time to recite this?
Morning recitation before daily activities is the standard practice, as the mantras are designed to set the direction of one's intentions. It is also appropriate during meditation and at times of major decisions or spiritual retreat.
What is the historical and traditional background?
The Shiva Sankalpa Upanishad is an integral part of the Shukla Yajurveda and is positioned within or near the Vajasaneyi Samhita. Its composition is attributed to the late Vedic period, placing it among the older layers of Sanskrit mantra literature. As Shruti (revealed scripture), it has no individual human author; it is transmitted as part of the Vedic heritage of the Shukla Yajurveda shakha. The recurring focus on mind (manas) reflects the philosophical concerns of the Vedic and early Upanishadic periods, where consciousness and its proper orientation were central questions.
