About This Stotram
Overview
The Daridrya Dahana Shiva Stotram is a nine-verse Sanskrit hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva, composed to invoke his grace for the removal of poverty. The name translates directly as "the Shiva hymn that burns away poverty," and the text describes Shiva's divine attributes while petitioning him for relief from material hardship.
What are the benefits of chanting Daridrya Dahana Shiva Stotram?
- Recitation is traditionally associated with alleviation of financial distress and material poverty.
- The hymn invokes Shiva's protective and boon-granting aspects, asking for the removal of suffering and scarcity.
- Chanting on Pradosha (the 13th lunar day) and Maha Shivaratri is considered especially effective.
- Regular recitation supports devotional focus on Shiva's compassionate nature as provider.
- The text is used within the Shaiva tradition as a practical petition hymn alongside philosophical stotrams.
When is the best time to recite this?
Pradosha days (the period around sunset on the 13th lunar day of each fortnight) and Maha Shivaratri are the most recommended times. Morning and evening recitations are also standard. The stotram is appropriate whenever one is facing financial hardship and seeks Shiva's intervention.
What is the historical and traditional background?
The author and precise date of composition of the Daridrya Dahana Shiva Stotram are unknown. The text does not appear to derive from a major canonical Shaiva scripture such as the Shiva Purana or the Agamas, and it is classified as a later devotional composition. Hymns addressing material concerns through Shiva's grace form a recognized category within Shaiva devotional literature, which developed substantially from the Puranic period onward. The text has circulated widely in various regional devotional anthologies across India.
