About This Stotram

Overview

The Shiva Ashtottara Sata Nama Stotram is a 13-verse Sanskrit stotram that presents 108 names of Lord Shiva in metrical verse form, as opposed to the standard namavali (list) format. It belongs to the Shaiva devotional tradition and provides the same 108 epithets of Shiva as the Shiva Ashtottara Sata Namavali, rendered in a format suitable for verse recitation rather than individual ritual offering.

What are the benefits of chanting Shiva Ashtottara Sata Nama Stotram?

  • Attainment of the spiritual merit of Veda recitation, as traditionally stated for complete Shiva name chanting
  • Removal of sins and purification of karma
  • Bestowal of prosperity, health, and well-being
  • Invocation of Shiva's blessings through metrical praise of his 108 names

When is the best time to recite this?

Morning and evening during regular Shiva puja are the standard times. Maha Shivaratri, the month of Shravana, and Pradosha are particularly auspicious occasions for reciting this stotram.

What is the historical and traditional background?

The 108 names contained in this stotram draw from the extensive Shaiva name tradition documented in texts including the Skanda Purana, Shiva Purana, and various Tantric sources. The metrical stotram format for presenting namavalis developed as an alternative mode of recitation that combines poetic meter with the devotional function of name-enumeration. The specific authorship and date of this compilation are unknown, though the use of names such as Mahadeva, Shankara, Nilalohita, and Kapardi situates it within the mainstream Shaivite iconographic tradition.
