What is Shavasana (Corpse Pose)?

Shavasana (Corpse Pose) is a restorative resting pose performed at the end of yoga sessions. You lie on your back with legs extended, arms at your sides, and eyes closed. The goal is conscious relaxation—fully releasing physical tension while maintaining awareness.

Sanskrit Name and Meaning

  • Sanskrit: शवासन (Shavasana)
  • Pronunciation: SHAH-vah-sah-nah

Physical:

  • Shifts nervous system from fight-or-flight to rest mode
  • Lowers heart rate and blood pressure
  • Reduces muscle tension and fatigue
  • Improves circulation and digestion
  • Helps manage chronic pain
  • Allows body to absorb benefits of yoga practice

Mental & Emotional:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Sharpens focus and mental clarity
  • Improves mood
  • Builds emotional balance

Health Applications:

  • Helps with insomnia and sleep
  • Relieves tension headaches
  • Supports recovery from injury or illness
  • Builds resilience to chronic stress

Precautions & When to Consult a Doctor

Avoid this pose if you have:

  • Acute spinal or back injury
  • Recent abdominal or spinal surgery
  • Severe anxiety or trauma (stillness may trigger symptoms)
  • Concerns about lying flat during pregnancy

Consult a healthcare provider if you have:

  • Pre-existing medical conditions that affect lying flat
  • Persistent pain during or after the pose
  • Recovery needs from recent injury or surgery

Step-by-Step Instructions

Setup:

  • Lie on your back on a yoga mat in a quiet, warm space
  • Have props nearby (blanket, pillow, blocks, bolster)

Step 1: Extend your legs hip-width apart. Let feet fall open naturally.

Step 2: Place arms alongside your body, palms facing up. Keep them 6-12 inches away from your torso.

Step 3: Roll your shoulders down and back. Open your chest.

Step 4: Place head in neutral alignment. Use a thin blanket under your head if needed.

Step 5: Close your eyes. Soften your jaw and facial muscles.

Step 6: Let your body feel heavy. Release all muscular effort.

Step 7: Breathe naturally. Don't control your breath.

Step 8: Scan from toes to head. Consciously relax any tight areas with each exhale.

Hold Duration:

  • Beginner: 5-10 minutes
  • Intermediate: 10-15 minutes
  • Advanced: 15+ minutes

Exit the Pose:

  • Deepen your breath
  • Wiggle fingers and toes slowly
  • Rotate wrists and ankles
  • Stretch arms overhead
  • Roll onto your side (pause 10 seconds)
  • Press yourself up to sitting
  • Rest a moment before standing

Common Issues & Fixes

Lower back discomfort:

  • Place a bolster or rolled blanket under your knees
  • Keep knees slightly bent with feet on the floor

Neck strain:

  • Use a thin folded blanket under your head
  • Ensure chin is not tucked too tightly

Hip or hamstring tightness:

  • Put yoga blocks under your knees
  • Place a bolster under both knees

Restlessness or racing mind:

  • Try progressive muscle relaxation—tense and release each body part
  • Use a body scan: focus on one area at a time
  • Count breaths slowly

Can't relax:

  • Stop trying. Let relaxation happen naturally
  • Release muscle effort, not the mind

Feeling cold:

  • Cover yourself with a blanket or sweater

Eyes too sensitive to light:

  • Use an eye pillow to block light

Modifications & Variations

Beginner:

  • Bend knees with feet flat on floor
  • Place blanket under head and knees

Back problems:

  • Put bolster under knees
  • Keep spine in neutral position

Knee or hip issues:

  • Bend knees; feet flat on floor
  • Bolster or blocks under knees

Shoulder or arm issues:

  • Rest arms at sides, palms down
  • Place hands on abdomen instead

Chair version (if lying down is uncomfortable):

  • Sit upright on chair, feet flat
  • Rest hands on thighs
  • Close eyes and relax

Advanced:

  • Yoga Nidra (guided deep relaxation)
  • Progressive muscle relaxation (tense and release each muscle group)
  • Body scan meditation (mentally scan each body part)

When to Practice

Practice Shavasana at the end of any yoga session. It's the cool-down phase where your body absorbs all the benefits from your practice.

Works with all yoga styles: Hatha, Vinyasa, Restorative, Yin, and Ashtanga.

Breathing

  • Breathe naturally through your nose
  • Keep breathing soft and effortless
  • Don't control or hold your breath
