Sawan Somwar Vrat

What is Sawan Somwar?

Sawan (Shravana) is the month most sacred to Lord Shiva, and its Mondays (Somwar) are kept with a fast and Shiva puja. Devotees offer water and milk on the Shivalinga (Jalabhishek), bel leaves, dhatura and white flowers, and chant Om Namah Shivaya. Unmarried women often keep the fast for a good husband, and married women for the family's well-being.

Which Mondays count?

A Monday is a Sawan Somwar when its sunrise falls in the month of Shravana. The month depends on how lunar months are counted:

  • Purnimanta (North India: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Jharkhand): Shravana begins the day after Ashadha Purnima, so Sawan starts about two weeks earlier.
  • Amanta (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Goa): Shravana begins the day after Ashadha Amavasya.

The dates on this page follow the month system chosen in your settings. In a year with an Adhika (extra) Shravana month, its Mondays are kept as well, so there can be eight or more Sawan Somwars.

How the fast is kept

The fast runs from sunrise to sunset. Some devotees take only water or fruit and milk; others eat one sattvic meal after the evening puja. The puja is done in the morning or at Pradosh, around sunset, and the fast is completed with Shiva's aarti.
