Rohini Vrat

What is Rohini Vrat?

Rohini Vrat is a Jain vrat, kept on the day the Moon is in Rohini nakshatra, which comes about once a month. It is dedicated to Bhagwan Vasupujya, the twelfth Tirthankara. Jain women keep it for the long life and well-being of their husbands and the peace of the family, and men and women alike keep it for self-discipline and the shedding of karma.

Which day is it kept?

Rohini Vrat is kept on the day the Moon is in Rohini nakshatra at sunrise. The fast is broken (Parana) when Rohini ends and Margashirsha nakshatra begins. The dates on this page are for your location, as the sunrise and the nakshatra's times depend on it.

How the vrat is kept

The day begins with a bath and the darshan and puja of Bhagwan Vasupujya, at a Jain temple or at home. Devotees fast according to their capacity: some take nothing, some take water only, and some eat one simple meal before sunset, in keeping with Jain dietary rules. The day is spent in prayer, the reading of scriptures and acts of charity.

How long it is kept

Rohini Vrat is traditionally kept every month for a set period, commonly three, five or seven years, or five years and five months. It is then completed with an Udyapan, a concluding ceremony of worship and charity.
