Yamaganda, also known as Yamagandam or Yama Ghantaka, is an inauspicious period in Vedic astrology associated with Lord Yama, the deity of death and dharma. Like Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda is a daily occurring period of approximately 90 minutes that is considered unfavorable for starting new activities.
The word "Yama" refers to the Lord of Death, and "Ganda" means knot or obstacle, together signifying a period of potential difficulties and hindrances. While the name might sound ominous, Yamaganda simply represents a time when cosmic energies are not aligned favourably for new beginnings.
Similar to Rahu Kaal, Yamaganda doesn't affect ongoing activities or routine work. It specifically advises against initiating important ventures, ceremonies, or decisions during this window.

Traditional texts treat them similarly — both are roughly 90-minute windows to avoid for new starts. Rahu Kaal tends to be more widely observed, but Yamaganda is equally recommended to avoid in classical panchang practice.
Does Yamaganda affect already-scheduled events?
It specifically discourages new beginnings. If an event was scheduled before you knew it falls in Yamaganda and cannot be changed, performing a brief Yama pacification mantra before it begins is the traditional remedy.
What is the connection between Yamaganda and the ancestors?
Yama governs the realm of the departed (Pitruloka). During his period, the boundary between the living and ancestral realms is subtly thinner, making it a meaningful time for tarpan rather than worldly new starts.
