Kartik Purnima 2015 Date & Puja Muhurat

Importance and Significance

Kartik Purnima, also known as Tripuri Purnima or Dev Deepavali, occurs on the full moon night of the Kartik month in the Hindu lunar calendar. This day is significant for the worship of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. It is considered a time for spiritual development and receiving blessings. The full moon symbolizes completion and the end of cycles, making Kartik Purnima a period for reflection and purification.

This day is considered suitable for performing pujas, observing fasts, and acts of charity. Bathing in sacred rivers on this day is believed to remove sins and grant spiritual merit. The festival also marks the end of the Kartik month, which is considered sacred for devotional practices. The day is associated with the victory of good over evil.

History and Traditions

Kartik Purnima's history is linked to Vedic and Puranic stories. One tradition connects the day to Lord Shiva's defeat of the demon Tripurasura, representing the destruction of ignorance. Another tradition links it to Lord Vishnu's Vamana avatar, who humbled the demon king Bali.

Traditional practices include pujas for Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu, chanting mantras, offering flowers, and lighting lamps. Lighting lamps, especially near water bodies, symbolizes dispelling darkness and promoting spiritual knowledge. The Kartik Snana, or holy bath in sacred rivers, is performed for purification.

Celebrations and Observances

Kartik Purnima is celebrated throughout India with regional differences. In North India, it is observed as Dev Deepavali, with Varanasi illuminated by lamps on the Ganges ghats. In Maharashtra, it is known as Tripuri Purnima, involving fasting and prayers. Many communities hold fairs and cultural events. Modern observances include community gatherings, temple rituals, and continuing traditional fasting and charity.
