Chhath Puja: Purpose and Practice

Chhath Puja is a Hindu festival honoring Surya Dev (the Sun God) and Chhathi Maiya. It is observed primarily in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, with practices now widespread across India. The festival serves as an expression of gratitude and a request for blessings related to well-being, prosperity, and family protection. The worship of the Sun God is based on Vedic traditions, acknowledging the Sun as a source of life and energy.

The festival emphasizes purity, self-discipline, and respect for nature, particularly water bodies, which are integral to its rituals. Devotees undertake strict fasts and perform specific ceremonies as a demonstration of devotion.

Origins and Rituals

Chhath Puja's origins are linked to ancient Vedic practices. The worship of the Sun God is a fundamental aspect of Vedic religion, referenced in the Rigveda. Some traditions associate the festival with figures from the epic period, such as Karna. Chhathi Maiya is often understood as a representation of nature or divine feminine energy.

Key Vedic practices include periods of fasting and purification. A central ritual involves offering Arghya (water libations) to the setting and rising sun, typically performed at riverbanks or other water sources. These offerings, made at specific times, represent life cycles and the Sun's continuous energy. The festival's progression, from initial purification rituals to the final sun offerings, reflects a reverence for natural cycles.

Festival Schedule and Observance

Chhath Puja spans four days, each with distinct rituals. It generally occurs in the Hindu month of Kartik (October or November). Devotees observe strict fasts, with some practicing complete water abstinence. The main events include offering Sandhya Arghya to the setting sun and Usha Arghya to the rising sun, usually at riverbanks or ponds. Special foods and offerings are prepared. While historically prominent in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, Chhath Puja is now observed by communities throughout India.
