Varalakshmi Vratam

What is Varalakshmi Vratam?

Varalakshmi Vratam is the puja of Goddess Lakshmi as Varalakshmi, the giver of boons, kept mainly by married women in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu for the prosperity and well-being of the family. Worshipping Varalakshmi is said to equal worshipping the Ashta Lakshmi, the eight forms of the Goddess.

Which day is it kept?

Varalakshmi Vratam is kept on the Friday on or before Shravana Purnima, the full moon of Shravana. The dates on this page are for your location.

How the puja is done

A kalash filled with rice or water is decorated as the Goddess, with a coconut, mango leaves, a face of the Goddess, jewellery and a saree, and placed on a rangoli. Women fast until the puja, worship the kalash with flowers, turmeric and kumkum, offer sweets and fruit, and tie a yellow sacred thread (dora) on the right wrist. The Varalakshmi katha is read and tamboolam is given to married women who visit.
